Circus museum tries to bounce back

Steve Freese talks about some of the history at the Circus World Museum Thursday, July 12, 2007, in Baraboo, Wis. The museum, which opened in 1959, is spread out over a 63-acre site that served as the winter home of the Ringling brothers' circus from 1884 to 1918. Tourists were abandoning this small town, where Ringling Brothers got its start, largely because of the end of the annual circus parade that helped fund the museum. But now the museum might be saved, thanks to savvy fundraising, operational finesse, and a former state lawmaker who ran off to join the circus — or at least the circus museum.

European prices aren’t so outrageous after all

Tourists enjoy the sun in a crowded St.Mark's Square, in Venice, northern Italy, with St. Mark's Basilica in the background, in this May 1, 2007 photo. A message to visitors to Venice: No bare torsos in St. Mark's Square. No lounging on the monuments. And no feet dangling in the canals. (AP Photo/Gigi Costantini)To hear the travel press tell it, European prices are so sky-high that travelers should just unpack and stay home. Not so! Charlie Leocha has just returned from two weeks in Spain with a pocket full of receipts to prove it.
